What happened on October 28
Most reports said the app would not load. Others mentioned slow replies, error messages, characters not appearing, and login or captcha loops. One tracker logged a second wave from about 17:10 UTC. We could not read Character.AI’s own status page, so we cannot tell you the cause, how many accounts were affected, or whether it is fully fixed for you.

Checks to try
- Close the app completely and reopen it, or reload the website.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update the app, or try character.ai in a browser.
- Sign out and back in once. Do not create a new account to get around it.
- If it works for others but not you, clear the browser cache or try another device.
An outage is not the Chapter 11 case
Character.AI is going through a Chapter 11 sale. An app failing to load on one day does not mean it has shut down, and the sale has not, by itself, turned the app off. Read our Chapter 11 update for what is known about the sale.
Save what you can when it works
Repeated interruptions are a good reason to keep your own copy. When Character.AI loads again, you can request your data export and note the characters and scenes that matter to you. Characters you created can be moved with the character migration tool.

On October 28, 2026, between about 17:00 and 18:30 UTC, we read outage trackers that count user reports (IsDown, Downforeveryoneorjustme and StatusGator as reported by IBTimes) and a Downdetector breakdown published by SWP. These count reports; they do not confirm the cause. Character.AI’s official status page did not respond to our requests. This page is not a live status monitor.
